M & S meet. Quickly Scully develops a sense of loyalty to her new partner, and Mulder even trusts her. Mulder likes to invade her personal space, they are easy going together; instantly comfortable. Over the course of the season, it becomes clear that Scully is developing an everyday crush on her coworker. She is protective of him, quick to come to his defense, and is even jealous when Mulder gives her occasion to be.
Keep in mind, I think this is still just a crush, and not, you know, epic. I still think Mulder is the first to develop serious feelings, but we won't see this until much later.
At this point in the series, Scully is not yet totally damaged by her career; if she has had a stressful life so far, it has only been ordinary-life kind of stresses, not aliens-abducted-me, my-family-is-dead, and my-life-is-ruined kind of stresses. She's is still a woman, and totally capable of having a crush on a coworker. And with all of Mulder's invasion of personal space, it's easy to see why she might think he's interested in her.
I don't mean to imply this 'relationship' is one-sided. In Beyond the Sea, after her father dies, Mulder shows he really cares for her (and vice versa). In Lazarus, when Scully is kidnapped, he tells the task force with more than a hint of pain in his voice "And for those of you ---who don’t know already this one’s important to me. So, uh, let’s do it right. Thanks".
We also have indirect admissions of attraction; Scully's friend in Jersey Devil indicated Scully thought Mulder was cute, and also in EBE where Mulder tells her "I think it's remotely plausible that someone might think you're hot."

Well summed up. I think their (developing) relationship also depends on:
ReplyDelete- Mulder is a perv. He probably hides this from most women he's interested in, which necessarily means him lying, which he loathes on principle. If he's open about it, the majority probably run away screaming.
- For her part, Scully is repulsed by "ordinary" men, and seems to shy away when hit on. Mulder is both interesting and seemingly safe, which is exactly the right mix to interest her.
Both M&S had preconceived notions about the other that proved completely wrong - Mulder's not a crank (well, not all the way), and Scully's not an asskissing by-the-book type. They're both pleasantly surprised with each other.
